Who you got?
San Jose, CA
November 2024
Walking through San Jose, I saw a man in his fifties playing basketball alone. No teammates, no opponent—just him and the hoop.
Every shot carried the weight of years, maybe decades since he first picked up the game.
Born in Cambodia, his journey must have brought him here—far from where he first learned to play, likely with friends, calling plays, and trading laughter.
But now, in the quiet of his Friday ritual, it was different.
In pickup basketball, they usually ask, "Who you got?" Life, too, asks the same.
And in that moment, he seemed to leave me with an answer: "I got me."
Sometimes, that’s all we need.
